PHOENIX — The boxing ring was Mario Abraham Torres Jr.'s happy place. His mother, Brooke Ballesteros, said he was passionate about many things. However, boxing had his heart.
"He's the most amazing human being I've ever met in my life, next to my daughters," Ballesteros said. "He was passionate about everything he wanted to do and put his mind to. He was an incredible boxer, and he was going places."
However, in September 2023, the 16-year-old tragically passed.
"Without us knowing, he had a mild concussion," she said. "We didn't know, and he went to spar. When he got hit in the head, it ultimately ruptured the blood vessel, and he collapsed."
Abraham's family had said their goodbyes. His mother, though, said she made sure her son got to be the hero she always knew he was.
