RALEIGH, N.C. — November is Diabetes Awareness Month, a time to spotlight the growing number of Americans living with diabetes and the importance of education and prevention.

In North Carolina, an estimated 1,060,700 adults, or 10.8% of the population, have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Each year, about 53,000 more receive the diagnosis.

For Jasmine Canady, the news came as a shock.

“I am 32 years old and was diagnosed at 14 in 2009,” she said. “It came as a surprise because I played basketball from age four through the collegiate level.”

Jasmine said her diagnosis revealed how little she knew about nutrition and proper diabetes management. “I was never really educated about eating healthy or taking care of myself,” she recalled.
