FAYETTE — Fayette voters will decide Nov. 4 whether to authorize the city of Fayette to appoint a chief of police.

The city marshal currently leads law enforcement in the city. If voters approve the ballot measure, the chief of police would perform all the duties of the current city marshal.

The Fayette Board of Alderman voted in July to propose the new policy. If approved, the change would take effect after the current city marshal's term ends in April 2026.

The notable difference between the two is the chief of police would be appointed by the mayor , while the marshal is elected by city voters .
