While our UCP government was busy using a legal H-bomb to crater the rights of Alberta workers, and put themselves on an armageddon course with Alberta’s labour movement, a solemn swearing-in ceremony at Edmonton’s city hall last week was a needed reminder that there can still, sometimes, be dignity in politics.
As the 13 beaming members of the new city council looked on, Mayor Andrew Knack delivered a strong speech that was heavy on themes of trust, humility and hard work to make life better for those they represent.
“No one moves to a city they think is in decline. Our job is to meet that hope with action,” Knack said to the crowd gathered under the glass pyramids.
