The Prince George's County Council plans to address chronic illnesses and food insecurity through a new pilot program called Food as Medicine, which unanimously passed the county council Tuesday afternoon.
Supporters say the county will lead the state in not only addressing but preventing heart disease and other health issues.

Councilmember Wala Blegay championed the Food as Medicine pilot program, which is meant to prevent and fight chronic disease through diet.
“If we put it forward and we really push this, we are gonna be the leader on this issue we will be the leader in prevention, meaning health care starts in your kitchen, not the hospital,” Blegay said.
