OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - A Miami man repeatedly traveled to Omaha to steal more than $45,000 from three Nebraska banks and their customers using only a cellphone, according to Douglas County authorities.

Jordan Janvier, 33, was arrested in Miami and extradited to Omaha on charges related to a “smishing” scam that used fake text messages to trick bank customers into revealing their account information.

Security cameras captured Janvier allegedly conducting the scheme during three trips to the Omaha area this past summer, Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hanson said.

“The smishing scam comes into your phone via text message saying a suspicious transaction has happened on your bank account,” Hanson said. “It tells you how to contact the bank but it’s not really bank it’s the scammers.”
