JOHNS ISLAND — Two people died after a vehicle went off River Road and got stuck upside down and submerged in a creek, officials said.

The 700 block of River Road was closed to evening rush hour traffic in both directions as authorities investigate.

First responders arrived to the scene around 2:30 p.m. Nov. 5. They discovered the vehicle drove off a portion of the road that passes over a creek connected to the Stono River.

St. John’s Fire District Rescue entered the water in an attempt to access the interior of the vehicle, but access was “difficult and unsuccessful,” fire chief Ryan Kunitzer said.

First responders were able to turn the vehicle over and pull it to the embankment. Inside, two people were dead, Kunitzer said.
