NEW HAVEN, W.Va. (WSAZ) - People in the town of New Haven may soon be seeing their water bills go up.

A meeting was held Wednesday at City Hall with the state Public Service Commission.

While the town requested a 35% rate hike for water customers, the PSC denied that request, instead recommending a 17.5% increase.

Several people showed up to protest the higher costs. However, city officials said the prices of the chemicals and tests used to maintain the plant have gone up. They said if customers want clean water, raising rates is the only option.

The increase still must receive final approval from the PSC, but the mayor said he’s confident that will happen.
