Toronto police have arrested a suspect in the shooting death of Mohamed Ahmed, the brother of singer and poet Mustafa, which occurred over two years ago. Yasir Mohamed, 29, was taken into custody by the fugitive squad on Friday. He faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, in connection with the fatal incident.
The shooting took place on July 25, 2023, near Sherbourne and Shuter Streets around noon. Officers responded to reports of gunfire and found Ahmed, 36, inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Ahmed was known for his connection to the Regent Park community and was the older brother of Mustafa, who is recognized for his music addressing gun violence.
Mustafa expressed his grief on social media, stating, "They killed my brother in the very community I gave my life to; here’s my faith on a platter; it won’t return." Hundreds attended Ahmed's funeral, which coincided with Mustafa's birthday.
Initially, police sought one suspect, Mohammed Abdullahi, 34, for first-degree murder. They later identified Yasir Mohamed as a second suspect. In addition to first-degree murder, Yasir Mohamed faces charges of unauthorized possession of a firearm, assault with a weapon, and two counts of failure to comply with a recognizance order. He is scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing.
Abdullahi remains at large, and authorities are urging anyone with information about his whereabouts or the murder to contact the police. The investigation continues as the community seeks justice for Ahmed's death.
