DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. (WMC) - Mississippi State Auditor Shad White says DeSoto County Crime Stoppers has spent nearly $400,000 over the last 10 years without ever providing evidence that it ever gave information to law enforcement or gave a tipster reward money.
White says DeSoto County Crime Stoppers did the following:
Paid extra fees to keep one of their two tip hotlines unpublished on the internet.
Could not produce any records showing it collected or gave tips to law enforcement, or paid a reward over a ten-year period.
Paid over $240,000 (or 60% of total spending) to employee salaries. Further records show the organization paid only one employee for years.
Purchased 3,000 calendars in 2023/24 and paid over $600 to ship them 13 miles from a company in Hernando to their address in H
