OTTAWA — A Canadian taxpayers’ watchdog is taking the federal government to court.

Announced Thursday, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is launching a legal challenge meant to reveal the true cost of Canada’s gun buyback program — beginning with a request for the court to rule on a long-delayed access-to-information request.

“Too often, the complaint investigation process at the information commissioner’s office becomes another barrier to accessing information instead of the safeguard Parliament intended,” CTF general counsel Devin Drover told the saying the move is an effort to impose transparency and accountability to a contentious policy.
