Even if you weren’t among the generations of diners who have eaten at Fred Luk’s restaurants since the 1980s, be it Filet of Sole, the Whistling Oyster, Cha Cha Cha, Wally Gators, The Strip House, Fred’s Not Here, or its sister basement restaurant The Red Tomato, odds are you’ll instantly recognize the bright orange neon “Wood Grilled Steaks” sign for Fred’s Not Here illuminating the King Street West sidewalk at night. For more than three decades, Luk helped shape the Theatre District into a dinner-and-theatre destination.
Luk died on Oct. 29 at the age of 70 from cancer. Until his death, he served as vice-chair of Smart Serve Ontario, the organization that trains hospitality workers in serving and selling alcohol, and helped create Smart Serve Cares, a resource providing free mental heal
