LANSING, Mich. (WILX) -On Saturday, community members gathered to dispose of their Halloween pumpkins in an unconventional way at the first Lansing Local Pumpkin Toss.
The event allowed people to bring their pumpkins and destroy them through smashing, sling shooting, and catapulting rather than throwing them away.
Eli Folts with Eastside Compost said the event addresses a significant waste problem following Halloween celebrations.
“A billion pounds of pumpkin that end up in the landfill after Halloween,” Folts said. “We thought locally, we could encourage people to drop their pumpkins off and why not do something fun with it while also recycling them?”
