A mother has been discharged from hospital following a violent incident at her home that resulted in the death of her 17-year-old daughter. Lainie Williams was discovered deceased at their residence in Cefn Fforest, South Wales, on Thursday morning. Her mother, Rhian Stephens, aged 38, sustained serious injuries during the attack but has since left the hospital.
Emergency services were called to Wheatley Place at approximately 7.15am after reports of two individuals suffering from severe injuries. Gwent Police have charged 18-year-old Cameron Cheng, a British national from Newbridge, with murder and attempted murder. He is also facing charges for possession of a bladed article in a public place. Cheng has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before Newport Magistrates' Court on Monday.
Assistant Chief Constable Vicki Townsend addressed the public's interest in the case, stating, "We understand that there has been a great deal of interest in this investigation. It is vital that people consider how their language, especially comments made online, could affect our ability to bring anyone found to have committed a criminal offence to justice."
Despite the significant progress in the investigation, Townsend confirmed that inquiries are ongoing, and residents can expect to see police presence in the area. She urged anyone with information to come forward, either by calling 101, messaging on social media, or using the Gwent Police website, quoting log reference 2500361653. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crimestoppers.
Lainie's family has expressed their grief, describing her as "brave and beautiful." Her cousin Megan shared heartfelt memories on social media, stating, "There's not enough words, rest peacefully our brave and beautiful cousin Lainie. Very fond childhood memories I'll cherish forever. You were and still are so loved."
Cefn Fforest Councillor Shane Williams expressed the community's shock and sorrow, saying, "We are all deeply shocked and saddened by the events that have unfolded. As councillors, we'd like to do our best to reassure everyone, and our thoughts are with the family at this time... When a young girl loses her life like that, it's quite horrendous."
The community continues to mourn the loss of Lainie Williams as investigations proceed.
