A nurse has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for stealing £6,500 from an elderly dementia patient in his care. Rexy Reyes, 52, was found guilty of two counts of theft at Nottingham Crown Court after a three-day trial. The court heard that Reyes, who worked at Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre, took the victim's bank card from a locker to which he had the key. He then withdrew money from her account on 22 consecutive days, exploiting her vulnerability. The victim, a woman in her 70s, has since passed away. In a victim impact statement, her nephew expressed that he has "lost confidence" in the health system due to Reyes's actions. Judge James Sampson condemned Reyes's behaviour, stating, "This was a mean offence which was motivated by greed and which took place over several weeks. You deliberately targeted your victim based on her vulnerability - that being an elderly dementia patient." The judge highlighted the breach of trust involved, noting that the public relies on nurses to care for the most vulnerable individuals. He remarked on the significant impact Reyes's actions have had on public confidence in the nursing profession. Prosecutor Devni Kitulagoda explained that Reyes took the card from the victim's purse after she was admitted to ward B47 in January 2020. The victim's belongings were secured in a locker accessible only to staff. The prosecutor added, "She was a lady with dementia who had been admitted to the QMC as her condition was worsening. Within her wallet was a piece of paper with the PIN number on it." Reyes used the card at an ATM located in the hospital, which was not monitored by any cameras. The court's decision reflects the serious nature of the crime and the breach of trust inherent in Reyes's role as a caregiver.
