North East Counter Terrorism Police have issued a statement following the discovery of a 'suspicious item' at a North East recycling centre, leading to the arrest of two men in their 50s. The military bomb squad was summoned to the Pallion Household Waste and Recycling Centre in Sunderland just before 2pm on Friday afternoon.
An Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from North Yorkshire was assigned to handle the item. The recycling centre was shut over the weekend due to the incident, but it reopened today, with Sunderland City Council apologising to residents for any inconvenience caused.
The two arrested men, aged 56 and 53, are being held on suspicion of an offence under Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act 1883, and are currently being interviewed by officers. Two residential
