HINTON, Iowa (KWWL) — Tragedy struck an Iowa high school basketball team during the first week of the season.
A bus carrying the Remsen St. Mary's girls team home from a morning scrimmage in South Dakota was involved in a serious crash with an SUV in northwest Iowa.
The crash happened Saturday just before 1 p.m. on U.S. Highway 75 near the Woodbury-Plymouth County line northeast of Sioux City.
Hinton fire officials confirmed multiple people were hurt, prompting authorities to declare the crash a mass-casualty incident.
In a social media post , Hinton Fire and EMS officials said the SUV was completely engulfed in flames when crews arrived.
It is not yet known if anyone died in the crash, but authorities confirmed several people were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment
