Authorities have arrested a man who barricaded himself inside his home as the body of a woman was decomposing in a nearby room.

Thomas M. Shaulis, 66, of Somerville, was apprehended by SWAT team members at his home on Mastogen Drive on Sunday after a nearly two-hour standoff, the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement on Monday.

Shaulis is charged with second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, officials said. No one has been charged in the death of the woman, as an autopsy is still pending.

Police showed up at the house at 1:08 p.m. after receiving a report of shots fired. Authorities were unsuccessful in attempting to contact the residents, who are known to law enforcement, authorities said.
