CHEBOYGAN — Hunters who have been approved for a special hunt in the city of Cheboygan will get an extra month to reduce the deer population.
City council approved extending the season from Dec. 1 until Dec. 31 during their meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 18, with council members Adam Bedwin, Brian Brandau, Hayley Dodd, Mayor Brett Mallory, David Martin and LeRoy Ormsbee voting yes and Mary Darling dissenting.
The city hunt is available only to hunters who use a bow. In September, council approved a fall archery hunt to manage the growing deer population, and the hunt is restricted to designated private parcels of land. Currently, the archery season has been paused statewide for the firearms hunt, which will last until Nov. 30.
