MADISON — Mayville rushed for over 300 yards on their way to winning the D5 state championship, 42-32, over Northwestern Thursday at Camp Randall Stadium.
The running game loomed large, but it was special teams that left its mark for both teams early on.
Mayville scored first a on blocked punt with 4:45 left in the first quarter. Owen Steger blocked it, and Weston Teeters ran it in. Just seconds later, Northwestern responded when Anthony Calore returning the kickoff 85 yards for the touchdown.
Landen Baker put the Cardinals back on top with a short rushing touchdown, capping off a 13 play, 69 yard drive.
Northwestern's Tysen Teal brought the Tigers right back, scoring a 16-yard scamper that would tie the game.
