SUTTER COUNTY, Calif. —

The Sutter Buttes are known as the smallest mountain range in the world. A portion of this ancient volcano belongs to the California State Park system, but there is no public access. It is surrounded on all sides by private property.

Enter Middle Mountain Interpretive Hikes. They arrange guided, educational hikes through the Sutter Buttes with property owners like Margit Sands, whose family has owned part of the Buttes since 1898.

“My father, he said we should not hog it all to ourselves, and you know it’s true because every time I come across a hiking group, they are always thanking me, so it’s worth it," Sands said.
