MILFORD, Conn. (WFSB) - Among the 40 children who found forever families on Connecticut Adoption Day, one story stood out as a grandmother opened her heart and home to adopt her grandson.

Cathy Rieben-Kay of Milford officially adopted 20-month-old Evan Kay, her biological grandson, making her his adopted mother. Her son, Evan’s father, died before the child was born.

“He was conceived two weeks before my son passed away, so my son never knew his girlfriend was pregnant,” Rieben-Kay said.

Rieben-Kay and her husband Brian didn’t know they had a grandson until Evan was nine months old. He had been in the foster care system since birth.

The discovery came when Evan’s biological mother contacted Rieben-Kay through the Department of Children and Families.
