DUPONT, Wash. — Troopers have cited the drive of a semi-truck that crashed with a load of live chickens on Interstate 5 near DuPont early Friday.

A Washington State Patrol trooper reported that "hundreds of chickens" were strewn across the roadway, before it was finally cleared around 9:30 a.m.

The crash occurred at around 1:15 a.m. near Mounts Road at milepost 116. Three lanes of I-5 were closed while cleanup was underway, clogging traffic for miles.

The driver told Washington State Patrol that he fell asleep and lost control of his truck. Troopers cited him for second degree negligent driving.

All lanes have since reopened, however the Washington State Department of Transportation reported that the backups initially worsened because drivers were slowing down to look at the distractio
