SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield Jewish Community Center is suing eight corporate entities in the sauna industry for $9.2 million.

The lawsuit filed in Hampden Superior Court argues a sauna and its heating element caused a disastrous fire on Nov. 19, 2022 , that caused $5 million in damage.

The building at 1160 Dickinson St. offers health and wellness programs and facilities, child care, summer camps and Jewish education plus arts and cultural programs.

A blaze started in the sauna area and was originally deemed an electrical fire by the city’s fire officials. The lawsuit filed Nov. 14 places blame squarely on a faulty sauna and defective heating element.
