A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after an incident at a house in Newcastle. A woman in her 60s sustained serious head injuries and is fighting for her life, whilst a man in his 60s is in hospital in a stable condition.

Emergency services were called to Durham Street in Elswick at around 6.45pm on Friday night, and a cordon remains in place this afternoon. There is a heavy police presence in the residential area to the west of the city centre.

Northumbria Police has launched an investigation and confirmed that a man in his 30s remains in police custody.
