The sun was shining and pom-pom beanie-clad visitors thronged Seventh street and Penn Ave in anticipation of Highmark’s Light Up Night, part of a 64th annual celebration for the city, on Saturday afternoon.

Police officers and business owners were preparing for 70,000 Downtown visitors.

“This is probably one of the biggest one-night events in the city of Pittsburgh,” said police Cmdr. Tim Novosel outside the Wood Street police station.

The Department of Public Safety assigned 100 officers to patrol the Downtown area Saturday night, said Cmdr. Novosel. That’s up from the typical four to six officers who patrol Downtown each day.
