NEW ORLEANS — Some local institutions are offering assistance to residents who fear they may be targeted by federal immigration enforcement in the coming days.
Civil law notary Sarah Manowitz spent Saturday at the Mexican Consulate in New Orleans providing free documentation services, hoping families would turn out in large numbers. Instead, she said turnout was low — and fear was the reason.
“It’s been much more sparse than we expected,” Manowitz said. “However, we attribute that to fear.”
That concern, she said, has grown in response to reports of heightened immigration operations in southeast Louisiana. According to CBS News, U.S. Customs and Border Protection is preparing to deploy roughly 200 agents to the region.
