An elderly couple whose bodies were found below cliffs in North Yorkshire died by suicide, a coroner has concluded.

David, 80, and Susan Jeffcock, 74, were found dead below the cliffs near Whitby on Wednesday, July 30.

Assistant coroner Jonathan Leach said he was satisfied that a letter sent to a solicitor from the couple indicated that they intended to end their lives.

The inquest heard that Mr Jeffcock’s health had deteriorated following his diagnosis of bone cancer.

Mr Jeffcock’s nephew, Kevin Shepherd, described him as a “lovely man who lived a good life”.

Mr Shepherd, in a statement read at the inquest in Northallerton on Monday (November 24), said his uncle had told him he was in a lot of pain due to the cancer before his death.
