NORFOLK, Va. — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is urging drivers to stay alert and sober as millions prepare to hit the road for Thanksgiving travel.
State officials are reminding motorists to sober up, buckle up and put their phones down as traffic volumes rise across Virginia. To keep cars moving safely, VDOT will lift temporary lane closures on interstates and major highways beginning at noon on Wednesday.
The agency will also suspend many highway work zones starting at noon on Wednesday to reduce congestion and protect construction crews. Normal closures and work zones will resume at noon on Monday, Dec. 1. Some long-term or semi-permanent work zones will remain in place.
Travelers can check expected congestion levels through the Virginia 511 travel trends map .
