Police say that the fire that ripped through a former nightclub in Wigan is being investigated as a possible arson by the Criminal Investigation Department.

The huge fire erupted at the old Jak's nightclub on King Street at around 10.30pm on Saturday (November 22). It was well alight when emergency crews arrived at the scene and taped off the area.

The busy road was closed by police and it is understood that the blaze led to the evacuation and closure of nearby bars .Locals living in homes close to the fire were also asked to temporary leave as crews dealt with the fire.

The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service used a drone to survey the site from the sky and in a social media post on Saturday night, urged people to avoid the area.
