Even the songbirds that winter over in Fairbanks are chirping a gracious tune as Thanksgiving nears.

On Saturday, dozens of people flocked to the Creamer’s Field farmhouse to make bird feeders from egg cartons and pine cones. The simple arts and crafts event has been a staple for the Friends of Creamer’s Field for years, said events coordinator Melanie Graeff.

“It’s really teaching people about winter birds in Alaska and winter feeding,” Graeff said while welcoming guests to the farmhouse.

Graeff said the event encourages people to learn about songbirds that winter in Fairbanks. Activities included coloring and the bird feeders, as well as exploring the exhibits packed into the small farmhouse that serves as the nonprofit’s visitor center, and chatting with Mark Ross, a retired wildlife
