ANN ARBOR, MI — The University of Michigan Law Quad courtyard has long been a scenic respite from the hustle and bustle of downtown Ann Arbor and the surrounding Central Campus.
It’s a quiet escape, a backdrop for countless graduation photos and occasionally a place to toss around a Frisbee.
But it took a hit this week as two beloved Elms, two of the biggest trees in the courtyard, were cut down.
Due to declining health, the trees that have stood tall for decades had to be removed, according to the university.
Members of the UM Law School community are mourning the loss.
Law student Emily McLean called it heartbreaking while stopping to chat with peers near the large stumps Tuesday, Nov. 25.
