A lake effect snow warning was issued by the National Weather Service on Wednesday at 1:01 p.m. valid from Friday 1 a.m. until Saturday 7 a.m. for Southern Herkimer.

"Heavy lake effect snow expected. Total snow accumulations as high as 6 to 9 inches in the most persistent lake effect bands. Wind gusts as high as 35 mph," explains the weather service. "The lake effect band is expected to drop south into southern Herkimer County late Thursday night or Friday morning. It will then settle near or south of the Thruway Friday afternoon and night."

"Visibilities may drop below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow. Travel could be difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday morning and evening commutes," adds the weather service. "During lake effect snow, the weather can vary
