LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Parents of current and former students gathered outside King Elementary on Wednesday to express disappointment at a Jefferson County Public School (JCPS) proposal that could close the Shawnee neighborhood's only elementary school.

A crowd of parents, alumni and supporters lined the front steps holding signs and voicing two main messages: they don’t want their school to close, and they believe there is strength in standing together.

Michael D. Thomas Sr., who attended King Elementary in the 1970s, said recent investments in the building make the closure proposal even more frustrating.

"You put money into the school, you put a new HVAV in this school," he said, adding one question for district leaders, "What are you doing?"
