CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) reports 248 fatalities in 2025 as of Tuesday, Nov. 25. This puts the state on track to mark less than 300 crash deaths for the first time since 1925.
Iowa’s DOT reported 261 crash deaths that year at a time when only 666,592 cars were registered in the state.
As of 2022, there were 3,738,619 registered vehicles in Iowa.
Amidst busy roads full of holiday travelers, the decrease in fatalities this year is a welcome sight. According to DOT state safety planner Larry Grant, it’s due to a combination of safer vehicles, safer road design, motorist education and enforcement.
