The Greater Fairbanks NAACP will feature “Joy as a form of Resistance” at the 73rd anniversary Freedom Fund Banquet. The public is invited to come for dinner, door prizes and dancing, starting at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Carol Brown Ballroom at UAF’s Wood Center. The local NAACP branch strives to make the event a teachable moment with dynamic speakers, and the theme of “Joy as an act of Resistance,” to remind attendees to find moments of light in a dark time.
The keynote speaker is award-winning Chicago investigative journalist Lakeidra Chavis, who got her start in Fairbanks. She’ll examine the theme, talk about her work as a Black reporter and look at systemic injustices in Alaska and Chicago.
