Temperance resident Kathy Shaffer walked around Menards in Holland with an Excel spreadsheet in her purse.

The spreadsheet contained a list of Christmas gifts and the names of friends and family she was buying for, including her daughter, Lena Hennen of Sylvania, who walked from aisle to aisle with her.

“She has our list almost done,” Ms. Hennen said.

In the bottom left corner of the spreadsheet was a sticky note covering an item for her daughter because she wanted to keep it a secret, Mrs. Shaffer said.

“It’s for her birthday,” Mrs. Shaffer said.

The pair were among the hundreds of Ohio shoppers who took advantage of Black Friday sales not only at Menards but also at Levis Commons in Perrysburg. Shoppers in Perrysburg visited Talbot’s and Yankee Candle, among others.
