Metro Detroit residents woke up this morning to the heaviest snowfall of the season so far, between four and six inches of snow of total accumulation.

Most of the snow came down from about 6 p.m. yesterday evening through 2 a.m. this morning.

Detroit and the inner-ring suburbs accumulated around 4 inches of total precipitation, while the snowfall was closer to 6 inches in places like Waterford, Lake Orion and Ann Arbor.

In western Michigan, the snow was heavier, with reports up to 12 inches in a 24-hour period in Zeeland, Spring Lake and Hudsonville, and 11 inches or more in Bellmont, Gull Lake and Holland, according to the National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids.
