GREENVILLE – After an overweight truck caused an Upstate bridge to collapse, police are ramping up efforts to keep heavy trucks from damaging the state’s bridges — a move that has snared hundreds of drivers in the process.

Tickets given out for driving over roads and bridges with a posted weight limit more than doubled in the first three quarters of 2025, according to data from the S.C. State Transport Police.

The tickets are a sign of how law enforcement is responding to concerns about the safety of the state’s bridges. They’re also an indication of just how many truckers use load-restricted bridges and roads, sometimes with serious consequences.
