GRAND RAPIDS, MI - A stretch of U.S. 131 in Kent County has been rebuilt for the first time in almost 70 years.
Crews were scheduled to remove barrels and work zone signs ahead of the extended Thanksgiving weekend, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Work on U.S. 131 between 76th Street and 100th Street in Byron Township was part of a two-year, $70 million investment that began in May 2024.
In addition to rebuilding 3 miles of highway, crews added weave/merge lanes between the 76th Street and 84th Street interchanges.
Workers will return in the spring to install new traffic signals at the southbound ramps to and from 84th Street. They’ll also plant trees and install final pavement markings.
The newly constructed stretch of U.S. 131 hadn’t been totally rebuilt since
