The downtown Fairbanks ice rink at the Lacey Street Starter Block is gradually coming together, according to Festival Fairbanks director Julie Jones.

“We are going to be holding our official opening on Dec. 20,” Jones said. The opening will include a skate party, hot chocolate and s’mores.

Jones said the skate party bash will occur from 4 p.m. to 7:45 p.m., coinciding with the annual Fairbanks Winter Solstice Festival in Griffin Park and just before the Solstice fireworks show.

“People can skate and then watch the fireworks,” she said.

Jones and local planner/architect Corey DiRutigliano pitched the ice rink to be set up on the city-owned lot after the Polaris Building demolition wrapped up this summer.
