BUFFALO, N.Y. — The temperatures could get into the single digits some days this winter, and there could be the potential for indoor pipes to freeze.

The Erie County Water Authority is reminding homeowners to protect their pipes from freezing temperatures to help reduce the risk of freezing or bursting pipes.

When water freezes, it expands in the pipes and could cause them to break, leading to expensive repairs, says the Erie County Water Authority.

“Burst pipes are one of the most common causes of property damage during the winter months,” said ECWA Executive Engineer Len Kowalski in a press release. “Homeowners can avoid costly pipe bursts through proactive prevention, which is much easier than trying to thaw them once frozen.”
