MAINE, USA — More than three billion mail pieces and packages have been accepted into the USPS network this holiday season as of Thursday, according to the USPS's live mail tracker . That influx creates more opportunity for thieves to steal packages off your doorstep.
"This time of year, we do tend to see an increase in package thefts,” Ryan Bailey, sergeant for the Old Town police department , said.
They’re known as "porch pirates," or people who steal packages left outside homes, a problem that surges with increased online holiday shopping.
"There's just an increased opportunity with the number of packages being delivered to people,” Jeremy Brock, the public information officer for the Bangor Police Department , said.
