An armed man who was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon by Sterling Heights police has been identified as Nicolas Quaranta, 54, a city resident, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting that took place at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at a condominium in the 44000 block of Apple Blossom Drive, near 19 Mile and Dequindre roads, police said.
Quaranta was described as “possibly suicidal” and appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis, police said. Trained negotiators talked to the man, who had a handgun, for over an hour. Quaranta pointed the gun at the officers, who fired, police said.
