The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office launched a pilot partnership with the S.A.V.E.S. Project. Police departments in Sterling Heights and Washington Township are participating in the partnership.
The purpose of the partnership, an acronym for special needs, autism, vulnerable persons, elderly, safety, is to promote better communication between first responders and individuals living with cognitive or developmental challenges, according to a social media post from the sheriff’s office.
Brenna Hogue, the co-founder of the project, said the project focuses on providing resources and training for communication with vulnerable individuals.
“There’s so many people that have been affected by this in some way or another,” she said.
