ABC News’ chief national correspondent Matt Gutman is set to join CBS News, according to a brand-new report.
News of the move was first reported by Mediaite.
Gutman, age 48, is making the jump as CBS News undergoes a major shakeup under new Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss.
Weiss has been actively recruiting high-profile journalists to revitalize CBS News, and Gutman is reportedly being brought in for significant roles, with the potential to anchor “CBS Evening News” in the future, the outlet reported.
Both “CBS Evening News” anchors, Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson, are set to depart the network this month amid turbulence over its parent company Paramount's merger with Skydance Media.
Sources told Mediaite that while Gutman won’t fill the anchor chair immediately, he is expected to contribute as a correspondent first.
Gutman, born in Princeton, New Jersey, and a Williams College graduate, has reported from more than 50 countries for ABC and has been chief national correspondent since 2018. He previously covered the Middle East for the Jerusalem Post and USA Today before joining ABC in 2006.
His move comes just months after he apologized for a controversial comment made during live coverage of conservator influencer Charlie Kirk’s murder in September.
Gutman had described text messages between suspect Tyler James Robinson and Robinson’s romantic partner as “very touching in a way we did not expect,” sparking backlash from those who accused him of romanticizing the alleged killer.
Gutman later clarified on social media that he tried to “underscore the jarring contrast between this cold blooded assassination of Charlie Kirk… and the personal, disturbing texts read aloud by the Utah County Attorney at the press conference,” and added, “I unequivocally condemn this horrific crime and the pain it caused Charlie Kirk’s family, those who were forced to witness it at UVU, and the millions of people he inspired.”
Gutman’s addition to CBS comes as the network faces criticism for a perceived conservative shift following the Paramount Skydance merger and the high-profile exits of DuBois and Dickerson. Weiss will moderate a CBS town hall on Saturday, Dec. 13, with Erica Kirk, the widoww of the slain activist.
