WENATCHEE, Wash. — Two highways along the Columbia River were shut down Saturday morning after separate deadly crashes, including one that involved a school bus.

U.S. 97 was closed in both directions at milepost 219, about four miles north of Orondo, after a single-vehicle collision blocked the roadway.

According to the Washington State Patrol, a preliminary report revealed the vehicle was being pursued by law enforcement when it failed to negotiate a curve and rolled around 4 a.m.

The 18-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Four passengers, ages 17, 18, 19 and 20, were injured and transported to the hospital. Their conditions were unknown as of Saturday evening.

Another collision on state Route 97A fully closed the highway at milepost 227, just north of Knapps Tunnel.
