A wrong-way driver was killed in a head-on collision on the Hutchinson River Parkway in New Rochelle early Sunday morning, Dec. 7, according to Westchester County Police.
The crash was discovered at 4:12 a.m. when a patrol officer traveling southbound saw two vehicles that had been involved in a head-on collision just south of Webster Avenue, police said. Officers found the wrong-way driver unresponsive behind the wheel, removed him from the car and began CPR.
The New Rochelle Fire Department and Empress EMS responded to the scene and took over care, police said. The driver, a man in his 30s, was transported to Westchester Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased at 5:07 a.m.
A preliminary investigation determined that the wrong-way vehicle, a Toyota Prius, entered the parkway at Webster Avenue, county police said. No calls had been received reporting a wrong-way driver or an accident, and police believe the collision had just occurred when the officer came upon it.
The second vehicle was a Cadillac Escalade. The driver and two passengers reported minor injuries and were treated at the scene, police said.
The full circumstances of the collision remain under investigation by patrol officers and detectives from the General Investigations Unit. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification.
Editor's note: The NY State DOT website showed two fatal crashes on separate highways minutes apart. However, police confirmed that only one collision occurred. This news report has been updated for accuracy.
