Warren — A new form of subsidized housing is popping up in Michigan communities for people who are working full time but still can't afford to buy or rent their own homes.
It's known as workforce housing, and at least four projects are planned in Warren alone.
Shelby Township-based VIP Homes plans to construct a 138-unit apartment complex on Cole Drive in north Warren, which will be the biggest complex built in the city since 1989. Two other apartment projects are being planned in Warren that will be even larger than that complex, but will open after it.
Macomb County developer Faye Baker, meanwhile, plans to develop 20 modular single-family homes in south Warren aimed at first-time homebuyers. Modular homes are built in a factory and transported to their final location.
