Shredded tyres and pallets falling from insecure trucks is the kind of debris you would expect on our roads and motorways. But this year an abandoned boat and a fairground ride were also dumped.

Out of 49,000 items recovered from the country's highways the region with highest number was the North West with 9,795 items retrieved in the first nine months of this year.

In the North West, 2,116 items linked to building construction were found (21.6 per cent); 1,550 vehicle parts (15.8 per cent); 984 tyres (10 per cent) 872 straps (8.9 per cent) and 847 bits of household and gardening waste (8.6 per cent). View 3 Images
